A trip to Circle A Cycles!

Last week we had the pleasure of visiting Providence Rhode Island a very charming New England town and home to Circle A Cycles! They were quite welcoming, friendly and hospitable and showed us the ins and outs of their incredible operation. They have a very well put together shop housed in a restored barn, in a lush little compound in a residential neighborhood in North Providence.
They have a fluid way of working that seems like play but turns out some serious machines indeed! They are capable of building or restoring almost anything in house all the way to the paint. They create a very elegant product, check them out. http://www.circleacycles.com/

These guys have the baddest custom machines to help efficiently create anything you want.

And a full service wet painting operation all neatly contained in the same building.

Memorial Rides for Melissa Carr

We are deeply saddened about the recent death of Los Angeles Messenger and bike shop owner Melissa Carr.

NYC: Memorial ride for Melissa Carr tomorrow night (Friday 22nd) at 10 pm to coincide with the ride in LA. Come out and say good bye to a friend who will be missed. Williamsburg Bridge BK side meet up.

Red Hook Crit!

Last weekend hundreds of people stood out in the freezing temperatures to race and spectate this years Red Hook Criterium. We were amongst the crowd cheering on friends. We had our money on good buddy Dan Chabanov who won last year. It shook out pretty quickly, after about 3 or 4 laps (20 total) the field broke into 3 serious groups with lots of slower riders and the immediately shelled bringing up the rear. Dan was in the lead group from then til the finale, trading pulls to stay away and always looking fresh, no open mouth breathing, no sweat! Austin Horse valliantly tried to bridge to the front group solo a few times but ended up going down coming into the hairpin a bit too hot... The field was peppered with pros this year and the course was smooth and fast not technical or cobled which probably favored the racers and ruled out the messengers. By the time it was 3 laps to go it got brutally fast and most of the field left on the course except the first two groups were lapped and pulled off the course. Dan was still doing his share of the work rotating to the front coming into 2 to go as a couple of guys tried to go off the front solo but were reeled back in after less than 100 meters. The excitement built with the bell lap and then there were just three careening toward the line, Dan was in third position but all three were less than a wheel length apart meters from the line. In the split second before the line Dan threw his bike just beating Mountain Khakis pro Neil Bezbek by mere inches in one of the finest amature sprints i have ever witnessed! Track sprinter Al Barouh came third also by inches. Honorable mention goes out to our homie Chas from SF coming in in eighth position.

Spoke on the wheel, Spook in the wind

I am selling my Columbia Twosome tandem bike and was just thinking of all the funny stories that happened on it.
One of them was using it for Spoke on the Wheel, Spook in the Wind- a trailer for a horror movie some friends and I made.
The tandem got flats the whole time, and I crashed us into the back of a van one day after filming. All the picnic food went flying and so did Shilo and I. We were literally laughed at by high school kids. Ha ha!

Spoke on the wheel, Spook in the wind was presented at Bike Shorts in Oct 2007 and never played or worked on since. :(
This was fun! Miss you guys- Bill Dozer, Shilo Byrd, Sara Evers, Araby Williams.

CMWC 2010 GUATEMALA!

Shawn and I are back from Guatemala...and things are still a bit fuzzy. Talk about needing a vacation, after your vacation. It was definitely a blast, altho getting there was harder than the qualifying race! The Saturday before we were flying out (on Thurs) our airline went bankrupt! After alot of deliberation and internet ticket hunting we ended up scoring tickets that were only $35 more than we had originally paid back in May and 2 days before original departure- game was still on.
We got to Guatemala City and stayed there for the first 5 days. Lots of wandering around, eating and drinking. Everyone seems surprised that we stayed in Zone 1 and loved it. Yeah sure all the security guards, police and army dudes carry huge machine guns. But the central market kept us entertained most of the time.
The Guatemala National Velodrome is there, but unfortunately we could find no address or person who knew how to get there. One cab driver took us almost all the way there and decided to go any further it would be 200 more Quetzales. Bummer.

On Monday we headed to the airport to meet our CMWC escort to Panajachel. Gustavo was a very proud Guatemalan who knew a lot of history and was way cool to talk to. We ended up getting to know him pretty well since the roads had been eaten up by the landslides and we got stuck en route to Pana. :(

We missed most of the crazy chaotic travel days around to Lake Atitlan..But still had our own adventures getting there. We ended up staying in TecPan, Guatemala's first capitol. The best food we had all trip! YUM!
After massive cleaning of the roads we were able to get thru on Tuesday afternoon. At one point all passengers had to walk across a foot bridge where there was a bad turn. Only drivers were allowed to pass. I guess they figure better to lose one than a whole car, van or truck full of people. Yikes!

Upon arriving in rainy Panajachel we were greeted by a very grumpy and rude organizer. If you know him, then you know his ways i guess. I wasn't impressed tho and didn't think coming all the way down there deserved to be treated like shit! Nadir and Andy ruled on the other hand! Along with all the volunteers! (Lola!!!)

The next couple days become VERY blurry. I had 2 birthday parties in this time frame. Cake and LOTS of beers! Hello Gallo!!

We missed the group ride around the lake being stuck in TecPan unfortunately. So instead we took a private boat across the lake to San Pedro and rode around there for a day. It was beautiful!

Before we knew it the Welcome party had begun. Shawn had went for a 54 K ride, 27 of it uphill to a 10,000 ft plus summit. I hung with the Australians, Germans, Swiss, Polish, Japanese, Guatemalans, Americans, and ....

Sleepless night before...
Race day!
I was in the first heat. My stomach was all nerves starting at 8 am. Each person racing got a cell phone and was told to wait for a call dispatching you to your first checkpoint. At the first checkpoint you receive your manifest. You got 1 hour to make the most Q. You were penalized for being late, and going the wrong way down one ways.
It was really fun. The course was somewhat blocked off to the public. Altho tuck tucks, street-dogs and oblivious locals seemed to not care. Mountain bikes were a plenty. Cross bikes seemed the best. We brought our Colnago and Tommasini road bikes w/25c's which definitely did the trick. With luck we got no flats over the cobble stones and gravel that made up half the course.

Neither of us qualified! HA! They accepted 5 girls and 30 boys from the 1st qualifying.
I got 9th, Shawn got 41st...due to his own as well as organizer/checkpoint error :(
They did a 2nd qualifying race but we didn't participate. I think I regretted that a little. But since I usually just party it up, I was stoked to have tried at all!

The awards ceremony was really fun. Food and traditional Guatemalan dancers that had an amazing firework display. Everyone was so thankful for being together there. A lot of prize bags and bikes got donated to the local riders.

Our girl Tron killed it. She was one of few who brought a track bike down, and her skidding, backwards circles, and track standing skills earned her a couple awesome prize bags and jerseys.

Our boy Kai Edel from Germany also killed it. Not only did he ride his bike from NYC to Panajachel on a fixed gear but he took 1st in the cargo race and 3rd in backwards circles.
(Plus qualifying in top 10) Oh Snap! We love you guys! XO

I guess this wraps up our report. I am sure others have better stories of racing and partying.

Too much beer, too little sleep. I woke up on Saturday morning at 5:55 am, roughly an hour or so after falling asleep from the sheer exhaustion that comes from a night of vegan white russians, on-demand cable, and the company of good friends. The irresponsible sort of exhaustion, an end-of-the-world exhaustion. White lines blurred together on I-95 south as my two friends slept in the passenger & back seats, and before I know it - but after my back wheel gave out on a wet asphalt corner on a pre-race lap - the starting whistle went off. I was in the 6th row from the starting line, and had figured that my race had been run before I had even started. Resigned to struggling merely to finish in the top 50 percent, I clipped my other foot in and realized, though, that no one around me was sprinting, and if they were, it was a slow roll. I attacked the hole shot, split between racers, and found myself in the top 10 after the first 1km; the top 3 after the first lap. It was a long, 6.2km course with a lot of wide-open straight-ahead terrain - my bread & earth balance. I put some distance between myself & the rest of the field and tried with all of my might to nail the dismounts, scurry up the run-up, and keep my balance around corners.

Tragedy struck. After a two-barrier run, any gracefulness had left me and, frenzied, I slammed my bike back down a little harder thanI should've. My chain was not only off the chainring, but also slightly stuck in the front derailleur. You know, the sort of thing that would be an easy, quick fix if you weren't trying to do it as quickly as possible. I lost a few positions, but got back on in time to retain top 10, and regain a few spaces to 7th. Energized & no longer nervous about racing in a region reknowned for its passion for cyclocross, I made it my business to push back to the front.

That's when my rear tire blew out. Due to the previous night's rain, I had switched over from my Michelin Jet to my mud rear earlier that morning, and in my haste must've inflated to 39 instead of 40 psi. Why couldn't this have happened during any of the races that I wanted so badly for an excuse out of, and not this? I quickly weighed my options & decided that it would be in my best interest to finish the race with the flat, at the risk of my rim, than it would be to give up. So I plowed on, spending as much time out of the saddle as possible, losing position & fishtailing around corners. In the final paved stretch, I gave it all of the gas that was in me, my rear wheel squealing in misery & the guy in front of me seemingly resigned to not lose the sprint to a guy with a flat. Tough luck for him, though -- I came in 16th for the day, out of a field of 80-some-odd racers. Not bad, but certainly leaving something to gun for on Sunday.

The rest of the day was spent in a Harpoon IPA-induced fog.

So, Sunday I had the taste of blood. My parents made it down from Boston, a lot of friends that I hadn't seen in ages were racing, and I felt just about as awesome as I had the morning before. There were only a few changes in the course, but they were each so well-planned that they drastically impacted the feel of the race; It was at the same time faster and more of a challenge than the day before. This time around, any and all dismount areas came at awkward instances; off-camber, around hair-pin turns, downhill. It wasn't going to be pretty.

My starting position was exactly the same as the day before, as was my plan for how to deal with the hole shot. It succeeded, and I saw my smiling parents at the first convergence of pavement & grass. Having never seen me race - or do anything competitive in the last decade, for that matter - I was excited for them to be there & supportive. The race was well-ridden by everyone in the lead group; The race leader and second place broke away early in the first lap, but the race for everything remaining in the top fifteen was tightly grouped together shortly behind. I rode about as well as I could have, and I think everyone else did as well. My friends & family's encouraging voices gave me the energy to push through the pain and sprint with all that was left in me through every straightaway, and I ended up taking 7th, marking my first top-10 finish of the season.

Harpoon IPA and laying in the sun followed.

It was nice to see so many of my buddies decked out in Geekhouse's hideously beautiful skinsuits & equally flourescent bikes. They're in the process of building a strong-as-fuck team, and I'm hugely looking forward to racing with/against them many, many more times this season.

I'd also like to congratulate my friend Donny, who works for Dash Delivery in Providence & rides for Circle-A's Team Makeout Party, who rode his first two cross races this weekend, finishing at a respectable middle-of-the-pack 36th on Saturday & a huge improvement 19th on Sunday, and also a congrats to Kissena rider Brittlee, who finished 15th in her race on Saturday & 12th on Sunday. Fucking rad!

Altogether, a pretty fucking sweet time in a great city. Granogue & Wissahickon abound next weekend.

GIRL GERMS: A BROOKLYN SCENE REPORT

Brooklyn has been home to all-ages, DIY venues & house shows for awhile now. In the past 2 years, New York – specifically Brooklyn, has blown up with lady-bands. Starting somewhere around 2007, when DIY shows found almost-all-girl line-ups involving the intricate all-girl-mathy-indie-rock band Each Other’s Mother’s (from the ashes of Con Amore), alongside bratty punks Cheeky, feminist hardcore band Carnal Knowledge, and all-girl-party-rockers Hand Jobs, among the many solo songwriters – it became kind of obvious that the ladies were planning to take over.

Now extinct and/or on indefinite hiatuses, lots of these bands have gone on to form new ones. Recently, Zombie Dogs was born – a new favorite all-girl thrash jam with relate-able hits like “Nerd in the Pit” and “THRASHIN”. If you feel like the only girl in the pit who loves math or lives to skate, this is your calling. If you miss bands that aren’t scared to pair the seriously feminist with the seriously goofy – this is for you. On the girl-hardcore tip, Death First is a new heavy hardcore band fronted by Jessy of Carnal Knowledge. Jessy’s unabashed feminist lyrics and raging screams are back in her new band that brings to mind the greatness of Antiproduct. Girl-fronted hardcore punk seems to be resurfacing in a major way. Cristy Road, whom you all may know [and love] as the rad Cuban-queer-punk-artist is now fronting a gritty pop-punk band featuring Crystal from Party Line on drums and rad-lady Jackie O. as well as, yes, Frank Unlovable – called The Homewreckers. One of the most exciting things about Cristy fronting a band is that she talks about shit like sexual assault in a way that’s totally raw – shouting, “destroy me? I’ll destroy you!” Jen Shell of the dynamic duo Shellshag has been co-running Starcleaner Records (for 15 years), booking shows, releasing records, and pounding the drums during the wee hours of the morning at our favorite sloppy house shows – proving to us that DIY has total staying power.

Grocery Thief are fronted by Julie's brutal vocals, playing seriously in your face, fast as hell hardcore punk. Hand Jobs are still playing their snotty brand of punk that hearkens to the riot grrrl spirit in a big way. There are countless more girls in bands -- Ina Ina, Hey Baby, Party Line, Love or Perish!, The New Dress, Taigaa! – now that we have girls playing in all kinds of bands, it's easier to book and see shows that are more equal gender-wise and more girl-positive.

Once you consider the other rad bands surrounding the 5 boroughs, extended family, we also have Fatal Erection, girl-fronted rock’n’roll hardcore from Long Island, as well as the now-infamous Screaming Females from neighboring New Brunswick, New Jersey. Speaking of New Brunswick, the ladies seem to be holding it down in Hub City. Pop-punk lives on in The Measure (SA) and Full of Fancy. Little Lungs is stuck somewhere between New York and New Jersey and always delivers the melodic poppy jams a la Archers of Loaf.

While it seems kinda antithetical to have a punk show be a safe space, feminist curators and show-bookers Strength in Numbers and For the Birds Collective are trying to do just that. Strength in Numbers is run by Karen Soskin, and their forte is “all women-run all-ages shows” while also providing tour-managing services for touring bands with women members. For the Birds is a multi-faceted feminist collective & distro, stocking feminist zines and music as well as booking women-dominated shows and releasing compilations of music by women and women bands.

For the Birds has been booking The Big She-Bang, an all-day fest of women bands, artists & crafters, as well as panels and workshops on community issues, for 2 years (relieving the long-extinct Long Island Womyn’s Collective of duty). Last year’s She-Bang was held at ABC No Rio, this year’s will be on August 15^th at Judson Memorial Church in Washington Square South (home of the Anarchist Book Fair and a lengthy radical history). Actual, physical feminist-punk spaces are few and far between so we are pretty lucky to have The 1087 Loft, a space that has a strict “no sexism, no racism, no homophobia, no god” policy. We also have the good news of a major renevation project at ABC No Rio, which has been a DIY punk safer-space with a "no sexism, no racism, no homophobia, no macho bullshit" policy for nearly 30 years now.

Not to blow your mind or anything – but along with this girl-punk resurgence has come the more consistent presence of visual art by ladies – Cristy Road is still going strong, writing books and illustrating from her bungalow in Bed-Stuy. Lauren Measure designs t-shirts and draws record covers in Greenpoint. Tamara of Zombie Dogs prints t-shirts (I bet you wondered where their really cool shirts came from!) and show posters, among other amazing gory things, under the moniker No Guts No Glory out of Stolen Sleeves at 538 Johnson.

Gina Marie, drummer of Ina Ina, owns King Kog, a feminist bike shop on Graham Avenue. Making t-shirts that reference old Bikini Kill flyers and artwork, Gina is swiftly bringing her own brand of Revolution: Girl Style Now to the track bike world, and the lady cyclists are rallying behind her. Drummer Mindy Abovitz (of More Teeth, Taigaa!) recently began Tom Tom Magazine, “a magazine about female drummers” – that features DIY guides like “Technique Tuesdays,” teaching drumming techniques in the true spirit of the skill-share. It’s hard not to mention all the other DIY feminist projects based here: Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, Holla Back NYC, Support New York, Right Rides, Safe Walk, Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen, and holy shit, so many more. Keep in mind, this is what's going on in my immediate feminist community. New York City is huge, and there is a ton going on here, so I am sure that I'm missing out on a lot. I guess it's up to us to find out what!

All of this rattling-off of names and events is not in vain – the ladies are reclaiming their space in the DIY punk scene. Queer girls have left the club and dance scene to dominate the punk contingent. Girls in bands leading double & triple lives are running collectives to queer-ify punk spaces. We are the new international girl gang underground and we’re not going anywhere.
